Dry Cooling

One disadvantage of solar thermal power plant - compared to photovoltaic systems - is their water need which is an issue in most of the potential site locations. However, most of the water is used for cooling purposes in the conventional power cycle, while e.g. the need for mirror cleaning and other purposes is below five percent of the total demand. With air cooled condensers, the water demand of solar thermal plants can be reduced by about 95 percent. The power cycle efficiency will only decrease slightly.
